I2V Workshop

Invention 2 Venture Workshop: The Medical Device Startup Process
Baltimore, Maryland – Held on November 7th 2008, the Johns Hopkins University hosted a one-day Invention to Venture Workshop on the basics of medical device entrepreneurship. I2V Johns Hopkins University 2008 is a fast-paced day of practical information and networking opportunities that can help take your ideas to commercialization. The workshop will consist of seven critical-to-success sessions led by real-world entrepreneurial speakers, practitioners, and panelists.
The Invention 2 Venture Workshop: The Medical Device Startup Process, sponsored in part by Hopkins Medical Device (HMDN), was a huge success. Over 130 attendees, ranging from undergraduates here at Hopkins to businessmen from nearby companies, spent the day listening to speakers speak from their own experiences of the intricacies involved in medical device development. The presentations began with Dr. Elliot McVeigh, Massey Director of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, talking of how prepared members of the biomedical engineering community were poised to go forward with their ideas and bring their technology to market. Following Dr. McVeigh, presentations starting from idea validation to prototype development and founding the startup company to securing funding through venture capital were given.
“The workshop was amazingly organized and provided so much insight into how one goes from an idea in the laboratory to having a product on the market that can help thousands if not millions of lives,” says a graduate BME student.
Not only were the presentations informative and interesting, the I2V Workshop also allowed networking opportunities during the many catered gourmet meals. Students and faculty alike were able to approach businesspeople with deeper questions and opportunities. Indeed, the Workshop provided many avenues for those interested in commercializing their technologies.
“If anything, I would have liked having a smaller group where I can get detailed step-by-step instructions on how I can work with Hopkins to start a company,” said Dr. Charles Della Santina, an attending clinician-scientist.
